Oval Brewing Company

Transient

The Oval Brewing Company was founded in 2009 by, Ohio State alum, Adam Benner in Chicago. The endeavor was named for the central greenspace on the Columbus campus – a nod to our Alma Mater and the spirit of community we wanted to nurture.

Since Oval's modest beginning, Grandman has served as the brewery's creative director. We developed a logo that drew from the pathways of the Oval that were initially worn into the grass by students headed to and from class.

In 2012 Oval began taking steps toward opening  a brick-and-mortar production facitlity and tap room in Columbus, Ohio. With these steps toward legitimacy, we decided it was time to take a look at the brand and materials. We streamlined the logo, and added various lockups for a more flexible ID. We also overhauled the beers' individual brands, using a unified illustration style that referenced golden-era collegiate sports and life. We toned down the overt Ohio State references to create a product that would appeal to beer drinkers outside of the Ohio border. The rebrand also included a complete redesign of the website

To aid in the start-up process, Oval launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise startup funds. From a creative standpoint, we created a logo for the campaign featuring OBC's basset hound mascot, Gus. We produced two videos for the project as well, which gave people a glimpse into the Oval process, and laid out our intentions. We also designed the various rewards for backers, including a silk-screened limited edition print which we printed by hand at Libre. Beyond the obvious pro of raising $30,000, the project greatly increased Oval's brand visibility both in Ohio and beyond.
